Sister Act lovers, rejoice! The disco-filled, Tony-nominated Broadway hit will launch a North American tour in the fall of 2012, beginning at Toronto’s Canon Theatre. Dates, additional cities and casting will be announced at a later date.
Based on the hit 1992 film starring Whoopi Goldberg, Sister Act tells the story of the fabulous Deloris Van Cartier, an aspiring disco diva who witnesses a murder and is put into protective custody in a convent. Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and an uptight Mother Superior. Using her fabulous disco-ness and killer voice to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church and community, but in doing so blows her cover. Soon it’s nun-on-the-run time, but she finds salvation in the heavenly power of her newly found sisterhood.
Sister Act was first produced at California’s Pasadena Playhouse, and went on to play the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia before beginning a successful run on the West End at the London Palladium on June 2009. The Broadway production bowed on April 20, 2011 at the Broadway Theatre, and it is currently nominated for five 2011 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical.
The Sister Act tour is produced by Whoopi Goldberg and Stage Entertainment and booked by The Road Company.
